Obituary: Adams County, Wisconsin: William WARD ************************************************************************ Submitted by Joan Benner, May 2005 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ From the Central Union [ Westfield, Marquette County, Wisc.], Thursday April 15, 1926, Page 1 William Ward, an old resident of Adams County, quietly and unexpectedly passed away at his home in the village of Brooks, April 4, 1926 at the ripe age of 90 years, 9 months and 15 days, of pneumonia. He was born in Loueth, Lincolnshire, England, June 20, 1835 and when but a lad of twelve years (in 1849) came to America with his parents, who located in Waukesha County, Wisconsin. In the early fifties of the former century, when Adams and Marquette Counties were opened to the homesteader, he walked from Waukesha County to Adams County and picked out his claim and then walked to Stevens Point where the land office was located and filed his claim. He was one of the first settlers in the township of Springville, where for many years he was one of the sturdy settlers of his community. In 1856 he was married to Miss Olive Campbell. To this union nine children were born, of which two with his wife preceded him in death. In 1907 he was again married to Miss Mary Girling. To this union one son was born, who also preceded him in death. About thirteen years ago he came to Brooks to spend the evening of his life. Retiring from the strenuous labors to which he had always answered in clearing his farm and promoting his community. About thirty years ago he united with the United Brethren Church, his church not being represented in his community at that time. He never lost sight of the higher ideal of life and was ready to meet his Lord when he came to call him. He leaves to mourn his departure his sorely bereaved widow, two sons Charles and William on the old homestead, five daughters, Mrs. T. Lewis of Adams; Mrs. C. Bissell [? ink smeared] and Mrs. C. Kline of California; Mrs. J. H. Giles of South Dakota and Mrs. E. Burke of Adams County, 39 grandchildren and 54 great-grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends. The funeral services were held at his late home and the church at Brooks, Wednesday April 7th, conducted by Rev. George H. Scheible, pastor of the Evangelical church at Westfield and interment made in the cemetery at Davis Corners
