Obituary: Adams County, Wisconsin: Rev. Elmer YOCUM ************************************************************************ Submitted by Joan Benner, May 2005 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ From the Adams County Press, October 15, 1898, Page 1 Rev. Elmer YOCUM, more familiarly known to the people of Adams county by the affectionate appellation of "Father YOCUM," died at his home in Kilbourn early Wednesday morning. Father YOCUM was one of the most widely known and beloved ministers in Wisconsin. It is said that he had preached in every county in the state. For many years he resided at Point Bluff, in this county. Two or three years ago his residence, with all its contents, was burned, and soon after he went to Kilbourn to reside. Elder YOCUM was born in Mifflin county, Ohio, more than ninety-two years ago, joined the Ohio conference in 1829, so that his ministry of the gospel covers a period of nearly seventy years. He came to Wisconsin in 1849. During his career he attended 67 annual conferences of the M. E. Church, the last one at Ashland, about two years ago. Up to that time, although on the retired list for some years, he had preached quite regularly. His ambition was to "die in the harness." While a resident of Ohio, Elder YOCUM taught a school at which William McKINLEY, now president of the United States, was one of the pupils. The funeral will be tomorrow (Friday) at half past three o'clock in the afternoon, at the Methodist Church in Kilbourn.
