In 1858 he entered the employ of Knapp, Stout & Co. In 1868 he, took up other work, but in 1876 re-engaged with them, and took charge of their extensive interests at Rice Lake. At one time he had some 2,000 men in his employ. He occupied several county offices in the early days, and in the city served as mayor, as chairman of the school board and in other capacities. He died several years ago. In 1868 he married Julia Vance, who died in 1886, leaving five children.
