He was born April 29, 1918, at Pepin where he was employed by his father's newspaper while attending high school there. Upon graduating from high school, he attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison, graduating in 1939 with a degree in journalism. He later received a Master's Degree in the 1950s from the UW. He was a veteran of World War II and was employed by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers. Mr. Axtell was managing editor of the Mazomanie Sickle. He moved to Rice Lake where he was managing editor of the Rice Lake Chronotype for nearly 30 years during which time he compiled information for his recently published book, "The First 50 Years." He served on the Rice Lake Planning Commission for several years. He was a member and past master of the Masonic Lodge and a member of the Eau Claire Consistory as well as the Zor Shrine. He was a member of the Rice Lake Elks Lodge, a past president of the Rice Lake Kiwanis Club and a member of the Rice Lake American Legion Post. He is survived by his wife, the former Bridget Sirianni; a brother, Robert, Muskegon, Mich.; and three sisters, Mrs. John Jackel, Issaquah, Wash., Mrs. Fred Hawley, Palo Alto, Calif., and Mrs. Reuben Roehl, Wausau.
