Eau Claire street, Monday, Feb. 14, after a lengthy illness, aged 85 years. He was born in Canada, where he was reared and worked at farming and other trades. About 40 years ago, he moved here, settling on a farm at Dobie, where he engaged in farming until 20 years ago when he moved to Rice Lake. He was twice married. His first marriage was in Canada to Adeline Houle, when he was about 30 years to this union, of whom two survive: Mrs. Eva Plourde of Rice Lake and Mrs. Louis Renville of Saskatchewan, Canada. Following the death of his first wife 49 years ago, he was married to Helen Roux. To this union twelve children were born, of whom eight survive: Mrs. Adolph Belland of St. Paul, Alberta, Canada; Amos, of Teedee, Montana; Albert, of Whitefish, Montana; William, of Saskatchewan, Canada; John, of Milwaukee; Mrs. C. Mercier of Rice Lake; Ed, of Rice Lake; and Mrs. Ed Hayes of Duluth. The four who died were Arthur, Alma, Emeline and Louis. Mrs. Chartier died June 15, 1918. He is also survived by three sisters: Mrs. Samuel Crotteau of Warwick, Canada; Mrs. Agnes Ray of Detroit, Mich.; and Mrs. Olivine La Fontaine of Lake Landing, Mich. Also, by forty-four grandchildren and eleven great- grandchildren. Besides his own large family of children which he raised, he brought up a granddaughter, now Mrs. Alma Martin of Milwaukee, and a boy, Wm. Turcotte, from the age of thirteen years to the age of thirty-seven when he was married. This boy was killed seven or eight years ago while blasting stumps on the farm. Funeral services are to be held at St. Joseph's church, Thursday morning, with burial by the side of his wife in St. Joseph's cemetery. Note: Lake Landing, Mich. may actually be Lake Linden in Houghton County, Mich where a significant French community existed. © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm
