Demars, who served 16 years as alderman representing the Seventh Ward on the city council until his retirement in 1973, died Sunday morning at Lakeview Medical Center, after suffering an apparent heart attack at his home Saturday night. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning from St. Joseph's Catholic church with Rev. William Horath officiating, and burial was made in the church cemetery. Mr. Demars - proud of his 89 years service to the community in a variety of occupations - had continued active even in retirement, although he reluctantly surrendered his drivers license earlier this year. He was born Aug. 25, 1890, at Dobie, and had come to Rice Lake as a youngster to work in various jobs around the city until establishing his own farm on the east side of the lake early in the century. Later he was also local manager for the Farmers Union Co-op Oil Co., and the representative of several mutual insurance companies in the area. He entered politics in 1957, succeeding Lee Patraw as alderman for the seventh ward, and continued as the principal spokesman for the south side until his retirement. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Catholic Order of Foresters, the Moose lodge and the Rice Lake Senior Citizens Center. He was married in 1914 to the former Lena Wille, who preceded him in death in 1966, and in 1968 married Tillie Black, who survives him. Other survivors include two daughters, Lucille Zabel and Valores Mazel of Rice Lake, a stepson, Louis Black of Chetek and two step daughters, Leona Trafford of Kenosha and Merlyn Bickford of Brookfield, as well as 16 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. There are two sisters, Alice LaBrie and Victoria Chartier, both of Rice Lake."
