Submitted by: Kent Robarge 03 August 2007 ************************************************************************ Obituary of Alfred Demers in Wed., Jan. 24, 1979 Rice Lake Chronotype (Rice Lake, Barron Co., WI) Al Demers, Once Prep Start, Dies At LaCrosse Alfred Demers, 58, of LaCrosse, onetime star athlete at Rice Lake high, died unexpectedly of a heart attack in LaCrosse early Wednesday. Reportedly, he was driving on his dairy milk delivery route when stricken. Funeral services are pending in LaCrosse. Mr. Demers, who was born in Rice Lake May 3, 1920, grew up here and excelled in athletics in the late 30's. He was a state Class B half-mile champion, a halfback ontwo Heart o' the North football title teams and a member of the 1940 state tournament basketball team. He was a combat infantryman with Co. D, 128th infantry, 32nd division from Rice Lake, serving five years in WWII in New Guinea and the Philippines, and after service attended LaCrosse State college where he played football. He has resided in LaCrosse since, and was a longtime employee of the dairy there. Surviving are his wife, Margaret; a son, Jerry of Chicago; four brothers, Ed of Rice Lake, Father Raymond of Guam, William of Los Gatos, Calif. and Gilbert of Minneapolis; six sisters, Sisters Rachael and Reginald, both of Manitowoc, Mrs. Leo Nore of Almena, Mrs. Vitalis Stoeberl and Mrs. Cordelia Ryan of Rice Lake, and Mrs. Delphine Erickson of Chelsea, Mich. Obituary of Alfred Demers in Wed., Jan. 31, 1979 Rice Lake Chronotype (Rice Lake, Barron Co., WI) Alfred Demers Funeral services for Alfred Demers, 58, of LaCrosse, a former Rice Lake resident, were held Saturday at Blessed Sacrament church in LaCrosse. Burial took place in the Veterans cemetery at Fort Snelling, Minn. Monday. Mr. Demers, whose obituary appeared in last week's Chronotype, died Jan. 24 of a heart attack. Relatives from this area who attended the fuenral were Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Stoeberl, Cordelia Ryan, Edward Demers, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Demers, DeWayne Demers, Daniel Ryan, Antoma Johnson, Leona Lucas, Catherine Rahm of Rice Lake; Mr. and Mrs. William Roff, jr.of Almena; Richard Demers of Cameron; Elaine Sundby of Colfax and Marie Kelly of Altoona. Others present were Sister Juliette of Chicago and Mrs. Delphine Erickson of Chelsea, Mich.
