Demers. Peter Z. Demers of 188 W. Newton st., Rice Lake, passed away March 14, at the age of 94, at home after an illness of three weeks. Services were held Monday, March 17 from St. Joseph's church with Rev. Msgr. P.F. Meyers officiating. Interment was made in St. Joseph's cemetery. J.P. Schneider had charge of the arrangements. Pallbearers were Harold, George, John and Benny Demers, Clarence Chartier and Adolph C. LaBrie. Surviving are four sons, Henry of Waukegan, Ill., Elzear, Felix and Louis of Rice Lake; four daughters, Alice LaBrie, Mrs. Ed Robarge, Evelina Demers and Mrs. Ed Chartier all of Rice Lake. Also thirty eight grandchildren and sixty-six great grandchildren. His four sons and four daughters were at his bedside at the time of his death. Those from out of town at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Robarge, Mr. and Mrs. Ned Degidio, of St. Paul, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. William Sundland, Mrs. Eva Dmers of Duluth, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. John Demers of Kelso, Wash., Mr. and Mrs. Leland Olson of Baldwin, P.F.C. Harold Demers of St. Louis, Mo., Mr. and Mrs. John O. Lewis and family of Oak Lawn, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Martin Lewis and Mr. and Mrs. Peter Scheiffer of Birchwood. Peter Z. Demers was born in Quebec, Canada Feb. 21, 1853 and came to the United States, Barron county, Wisconsin in 1868 at the age of 15 years with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Demers, where they homesteaded a farm one mile southwest of Dobie. He helped his folks build up their home and worked in logging camps for Knapp, Stout and Co. during the winter. In the summer he carried mail. At one time he carried a sack of flour from Menomonie to Dobie coming up along the Red Cedar river all the way through Indian territory. On Oct. 1, 1877 he was married to Celiner Robarge at Dobie, Wis., residing with his brother until in 1894 they moved on his own place one mile east of Dobie. In 1902 he sold his farm and was going back to Canada, due to sickness stayed in Barron county and rented farms until 1925 when he came to Rice Lake, where he resided until death."
