White Carrie Bell Gillette, daughter of Mary and W. Gillette, was born November 10, 1872, at Wisconsin rapoids and passed away at lakeside Hospital,Rice Lake, at the age of 83 years, and 11 months. When she was about twelve years of age she moved with her mother and two sisters, to Barron County where after two or three years her mother passed away, after which she lived with her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs, Ben Esterbrook, while fininshing her schooling. December 30, 1903, she was united in marriage to Arthur O. White, who preceded her in death march 13, 1943. Although Mr. and Mrs. White had no children of their own, they gave the love and guidance of true parents to two young children, Charles Kleve and Shirley White, who grew up in their home. Mrs. White taught school for a number of years. She was a faithful attendant at church services every Sunday and worked in all church activities. With a large Sunday school class of girls, they sponsored the purchase of a new bell when the church was built. Her vision gradually failed so for 18 years she was totally blind. She still carried on most of her activities, adding more when she learned, at the school for the blind, how to weave baskets also to use her typewriter, so she could send her loving greetings to all her friends. Again she had the joy of her life when surgury was performed on her eyes and her vision was partially restored. Her greatest recent accomplishment was the organizing of the Sumner Memorial Club, with the help of friends, and of which she was president until she passed away. Besides Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Kleve, Mrs. White is survived by five neices: Mrs Eric Matson of Newport, Wash., Mrs.Una McMillan of Kalispell, Mont., Mrs. Bay Morrison of Denver, Colorado, Mrs. Dell Cowin of Chetek, Mrs. AbImmerfall of Cameron; three nephews, Leslie and Jay Taft of Wayne, Mich., and Lyle Taft of Chetek; other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, October 13, at the Canton Methodist Church the with Rev. B. J. Rohan officiating. Mrs. Ervin Hensil sang "The Old rugged Cross", and "No Night There". Pallbearers were her great-nephews: Harold and Ralph Cowin, Gomer Massie, Ronald Immerfall, Jerry Aplin, and Richard Taft. Arrangements were caarge of the C.F. Burton Funeral home. Interment was made at the Lakeview Cemetery at Sumner beside her husband. In the passing of Mrs. White, Canton has lost their oldest and most honored citizen. She was brought back to her home here on Friday where her body lay in state amid a profusion of flowers, until funeral servies on Saturday. Relatives here, besides those mentioned above, were Charles Barry and Arthur Phanco of Newport, Wash.; Mr. and Mrs. Hank Bentson, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Bentson, Mrs. Morris Hulpman and Lorie of St. Paul; Mr.and Mrs. Henry Legel of Superior; Mr. and Mrs. Dell Cowin of Chetek; Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Immerfall of Cameron; And friends: Mr. and Mrs. Henry Byher of Park Falls; Mrs. Herman Hanson of Wentworth; Mr. and Mrs. Wes Winchester of Barron; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Losey of Humbird; Mr. and Mrs. Hector Hanson and Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Moin of Winona, Minn.; Donald Anderson of Eau Claire; Mrs. Kenneth Daniels of Woodruff; and many friends of Rice Lake, Chetek, Barron, and elsewhere.
