Mr Hanson was on the load handling the fork while his son was driving the team hitched to the hay carrier. The team was a little frisky and when the stake holding the bottom pulley came out after the top pulley had broken and the whipple-trees jumped onto the horses backs they lunged forward, and the fork with Mr Hanson was quickly jerked up to the carrier track, Mrs Hanson's right foot being caught in three loops of the trip rope. The horses went so far that the main rope snapped in three places with the result that Mr Hanson with the fork fell violently toward the ground and he struck the wagon tongue with his head with such force that his neck was broken, and death resulted instantly. John Hanson was 44 years old, having been born in Norway in 1874. He leaves to morn his untimely demise a wife and eight children, the oldest 19 years and the youngest about eight months. Funeral services were held at the Dallas Lutheran church Tuesday afternoon conducted by Rev Kirkeberg. Mr Hanson was a highly esteemed resident of Sioux Creek, and his tragic death has cast a gloom over that neighborhood. © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm
