Shield Mrs. Sarah A. Hotchkiss, the mother of W.R. Hotchkiss, formerly editor of the Barron County Shield, peacefully passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank Bond in this city, Wednesday noon, Sept. 25th. Deceased came here about six weeks ago from her home at Whitewater, for a several months visit. Although in poor health for years, the sudden call of the grim reaper came as a great surprise to her many friends here and elsewhere. Mrs. Sarah A. Hotchkiss, nee Slade, was the widow of Delos H. Hotchkiss, who died in 1886. Both were natives of New York. She was born July 2, 1838, and was therefore past 79 years of age at the time of her demise. Sept. 1, 1853 she was married to Delos H. Hotchkiss. Out of this union seven children were born, five of whom survive her. They are James D. Hotchkiss, Superior; Mrs. Frank Bond, Barron; Mrs. Geo. E. Carr, Barron; Chas. C. Hotchkiss, Elkhorn; and W.R. Hotchkiss, Menomonie. Aside from these, two daughters have preceded her to the home beyond; Cora E. Hotchkiss, who died in 1858 at the age of 8 years, and Mrs. Ella Sherman, who died at Lake Geneva, April 29, 1911. Mrs. Hotchkiss was a noble woman, a devoted mother, a kindly thoughtful neighbor, and has been a consistent christian from early girlhood. She was a hard worker in the cause of temperance and a member of the M.E. church at Whitewater where she and her husband made their home after coming from New York state in 1858. A short funeral service was held at the Bond home in this city Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Geo. R. Kershaw, officiting (sic), after which the precious remains were taken to Whitewater to be laid by the side of her life companion, who preceded her to the grave and to the home above, by the tender hands of some of those who in life she had made her dear freinds, and by whom the funeral was largely attended. In the death of his mother our brother editor has lost his dearest friend here on earth, and we would that me might write some word that would temper the grief which rends his heart strings. Under such circumstances we realize the futility of words. God alone can heal the wound, and we can but offer to him our sincere, heartfelt sympathy.
