Submitted by: Kent Robarge 03 August 2007 ************************************************************************ Obituary of Horace LaBrie in Wed., Dec. 5, 1956 Rice Lake Chronotype (Rice Lake, Barron Co., WI) Native Son Dies; Drove Stage in Old West A veteran stage coach driver of the Old West who was born in Rice Lake has died in Montana at the ripe old age of 88. He was Horace LaBree (LaBrie), who was born in the town of Oak Grove in November, 1868. Mr. LaBrie died Oct. 28 in a Livingston (Mont.) hospital, according to word received here last week by distant relatives. The eldest child of Mr. and Mrs. John B. LaBree, jr., one of the earliest pioneer families in Oak Grove, Horace LaBree later moved with his parents to Crookston, Minn., where his father became chief of police. But at the age of 33 he moved to Montana and was employed by a sheepman for a few years. In 1906 he began driving stage from Miles City to Ekalaka. He later worked for a livery stable in Miles City. Afterward hemoved to Garner, Mont., near the northern entrance to Yellowstone park and drove stage through the famed national park as a tourist service for 20 years. He worked first with horses, and later drove a bus through the park. Upon retiring he moved to Jordan, Mont., which was his home until his final illness. Mr. LaBree had never married but is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Ida Cook of Miles City and Mrs. Emla Barker of Jordan. He was buried in Montana.
