Submitted by: Kent Robarge 03 August 2007 ************************************************************************ Obituary of Aristide Mireau in Thurs, July 28, 1921 Rice Lake Chronotype (Rice Lake, Barron County, WI) Aristide Mireau Aristide Mireau, sometimes written Mero, a pioneer resident of this community, died at his home in Rice Lake on July 21, 1921, at the advanced age of 81 years, 8 months and 20 days, after an illness of several months. The deceased was born at St. Jacques de L'Achigan in Canada, on November 1, 1839. He received his education at the Seminaire de Joliette at Joliette, province of Quebec, Canada, and came to the United States in 1857 for a trip. Liking the country he took up his permanent residence at Detroit, Mich. Mr. Mireau was married to Miss Sara Labrie, April 19, 1868, at Chillicothe, Mo. Eleven children were born to this union, six sons and five daughters as follows: Eugene, Gilbert, Parmelia, Charles, Louis, Laura, Moses, Olivine, George, Alice and Grace. Louis preceded his father in death two years, and Grace died in infancy. The deceased came to Barron county in 1869 and lived here continously until his demise. He owned 160 acres of land in the town of Rice Lake and 160 acres in the town of Doyle, both pieces being across the road from each other. The deceased was a man who was always identified with movements that meant for the development of the community, but was always conservative. He was one of the first register of deeds for Barron county and held the office for several terms. He served his township as a member of the county board and was its chairman a number of times. He was a member of the school board for his district for many, many years. Mr. Mireau was an exemplary citizen and was held in the highest esteem by those who knew him. He was a man of keen intellect and until the very end was intensely interested in the current happenings of the times. He was one of the few remaining pioneers that helped blaze the trail of civilization to this fertile county, and many of the younger generation will hold it an honor to be able to say that they knew Mr. Mireau. The funeral obsequies were held from St. Joseph's church on Saturday morning, July 23, at 9:30 o'clock, the Rev. Fr. Van Helden officiating. The remains were interred in the Catholic cemetery at this place. All of the children were here.
