Submitted by: Kathy Winters 07 June 2004 ************************************************************************ Fred W. Roper was born in Barron County, Wisconsin to Wilder J. Roper and Sarah C. Mitts ROPER At his home in Pierce, Neb., on Dec. 23, 1898, of lung trouble, Fred, the beloved and only son of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Roper. The death of Fred Roper falls with unusual sadness on the bereaved parents. In that he was their only son, their hope and life in future years. Though sick almost fifteen months and unable to speak only in a whisper for four months, he was always cheerful and looking on the bright side of life, no complaint ever passing his lips, his great desire being to get well so he could repay his parents for their loving and tender care. He was not afraid to die and when “his doctor,” as he called Dr. Alden, told him he had not long to live he said to his mother “I am all right, but I don’t like to make you feel bad and who will take care of you when you get old? He died knowing all who had called that evening and was conscious until the last few minutes when he fell asleep to awake in a better land. Fred Roper was born July 6, 1882, in Barron County, Wis., being 16 years, 5 months and 17 days old at the time of his death. He lived in Nebraska twelve years. A father, mother, sister and large circle of friends are left to mourn his sad taking away. Our hearts are torn with grief and pain, Oh! Fred, we cannot say goodbye, Oh! May we soon meet you again And be united there on high. © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm
