Chicago: Ogle, 1901, p 270 SAMUEL COUGHRAN, deceased, was one of the early settlers and honored citizens of Sauk County, where he made his home for many years. He was born in VT 08 May 1828, and was a son of Samuel and Elizabeth COUGHRAN. The father, who was a native of Ireland, was drowned while a resident of VT, bu the mother died in Reedsburg [Sauk County], WI, where she spent her last years. About 1845 our subject came to WI and first located in Racine County, but in 1853 came to Sauk County, locating on a farm in Excelsior Township, where he lived for five years. He then went to ID, by way of the overland route, and for some time was engaged in gold mining in ID, WA and OR. On his return to this state he became interested in hop culture at Sparta [Monroe County, WI] in company with his brother-in-law, Joseph L. GREEN. In the fall of 1890 he went to CA, and later became a resident of Sioux Falls [Minnehaha County], SD, where he died in Nov 1891, honored and respected by all who knew him. He was a Knight Templar Mason, a member of the Commandery at Sparta, and was a supporter of the Republican party and its principles. In 1855 Mr. COUGHRAN was united in marriage with Miss Martha A. REED, a native of Greene County, NY, and a daughter of Alanson C. and Mary (ROBERTS) REED. [See also the biography of Joseph L. GREEN, this county.] By this union two sons were born: Eugene W., a real estate dealer of Sioux Falls [Minnehaha County], SD; and Frank R., now postmaster of Worthington [Nobles County], MN. Mrs. COUGHRAN, who is a consistent member of the Congregational church and a most estimable lady, still makes her home in Reedsburg [Sauk County], WI.
