Miles, Chippewa Falls, Wis., enlisted Nov. 7, 1861, at Galesburg, Ill., in Company E., 57th Illinois Infantry, and went into active service soon after. He drilled in rendezvous and camp, went to Cairo and Donelson, and soon after served with the regiment in Northern Kentucky and Tennessee; engaged in the siege of Corinth and the battle of Corinth, October 3d and 4th. On the last day he received a severe wound and went from the field hospital to regimental hospital and was discharged, after spending five weary months under medical care in hospital, March, 1863, under surgeon's certificate of disabilty for further military service. He returned to Mercer county, Illinois, where he recuperated his health, and in 1863 moved to Chippewa Falls and engaged in the lumber business, which he has since conducted.
