John Saunders, 77, died last night in a local hospital after an illness of three weeks following general disability of a year. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 9am from St. Patrick's Church with interment in Fort Howard. The family requests that flowers be omitted. *** Extracted from the Green Bay Press Gazette Wednesday Evening edition dated March 17, 1926 FORMER WEST SIDE ALDERMAN WILL BE BURIED WEDNESDAY John Saunders' Funeral to be Held from St. Patrick's Church. Funeral Services for John Saunders, 77, who died Monday night at a local hospital will be held tomorrow at 9 am from St. Patrick's Church with interment in Fort Howard Cemetery. Mr. Saunders had been failing in health since the death of his daughter, Mrs. A. Peterson, Milwaukee, who was struck by a street car and died of her injuries four months ago. He was confined to his bed about three weeks. He was born in London, England in 1849 and sailed the seas from the time he was a small boy, touching at every port the world. He was a dealer in fish for 30 years retiring about eight years ago. Mr. Saunders served the city as alderman four years and was greatly interested in the welfare of the west side, always insisting on calling it Fort Howard. It was largely through his efforts that the site of Union Park was converted to city use. He is survived by four sons and four daughters, Mrs. George Anderson, (address omitted), with who he has made his home for the past year, Mrs. Fred Richards and Mrs. Mable Ketters of Milwaukee, Miss Grace Saunders of Chicago, George, Fred, Sam and William, all of this city. There are also 25 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
