Charlotte Marie Hotchkiss was born April 20, 1878, at River Falls and passed away at the home of her son Vernon at Siren Sunday July 17, 1949, aged 71 years, two months and 17 days. The fourth child of Aaron and Minora (Hutchinson) Hotchkiss, she lived at River Falls until she was 17 years old. There she received her education in the public schools and River Falls College. The Hotchkiss family moved to Coomer in the spring of 1895 and took a homestead near Spencer Lake. Charlotte and her sister Mary (Mrs. Steinkuller) stayed at River Falls to finish the school term and then they walked to Coomer in four days. She attended the teachers institute at Grantsburg and taught in the rural schools of Burnett County. Her first term of school was taught at Webster, before there was a village. The school was held upstairs in the home of Mrs. Chelmo. She also taught a term at Swamp View school and a term at May school. She was united in marriage to Otto Hertel June 12, 1899. They operated the first Hertel store and postoffice on Mr. Hertel's homestead on Warner Lake. Later they moved to Oshkosh where Mr. Hertel attended a telegraphy school. They then lived at Crawfordsville, Iowa; Clyde, Ill.; and Glen Ellyn, Ill.; after which they moved to Chicago, where they lived until 1928, when Mr. Hertel retired and moved to their home and resort on Big Sand Lake. Mr. Hertel preceded her in death November 21, 1931, and she continued to operate the resort until 1944, when due to ill health she sold the resort. She lived at Hertel for two summers. The winters she spent with her sister in Vancouver, Wash. In April 1946, she purchased a home in Siren where she lived until June 1948, when she became very ill and went to live with her son, Vernon. She is survived by her son Vernon, two Granddaughters, Virginia and Georganne; Four sisters, Mrs. Edith Lauder and Mrs. Inez Larrabee of Hertel; Mrs. Genie Albee of Bellingham, Wash., and Mrs. Albert Miller of Yacalt, Wash. Funeral services were held at the Siren Methodist church on Thursday, July 21, at 2:00pm with Rev. James Everson officiating. Songs sung by Rev. and Mrs. Everson were "Near to the Heart of God," and "Ivory Palaces." Casket bearers were Allen Hotchkiss, Mike Hotchkiss, Max Larrabee, Ted Babcock, Clinton Van Guilder and Alfred Cooper.
