He was born in Hallsville, Montgomery County, New York, Sept 19, 1839. His great grandfather, Abraham Coapman, was a major under General Clark in the Revolutionary War; his grandfather was a captain in the war of 1812; and his father, John Coapman, was a militia captain in New York. He came to Wisconsin with his father in March, 1855, settling first in the town of Pacific then a year later the family moved to Wyocena. J.W. Coapman was a lawyer admitted to the Columbia county bar by Judge Harlow S Orton March 19, 1860. He enlisted in the general mounted service of the U.S.A. on Jan 26, 1864, and served three years. He was taken prisoner at Hagerstown, Maryland in the spring of 1864 and spent six months in Andersonville prison. He and some comrades escaped after being transferred to Savannah, Ga. and remained concealed until Sherman's army released them in December 1864. After military service, Mr. Coapman settled in Kewaunee and practiced law. In 1878 he was elected district attorney of Kewaunee County, serving one term; and also held the position of United States court commissioner at Kewaunee. In 1890 he moved to Portage and continued his law practice. He has been court commissioner for the last four years. Last Thursday, Mr. Coapman began serving his term as Justice of the Peace having just recently won the municipal election. Besides his wife, May Grant Coapman of Oxford, he leaves one brother, A.D. Coapman, station agent at Columbus; a nephew, Hon. L.N. Coapman of Wyocena; and a niece, Mrs. James Older of Portage.
