He was born in Nedere, Norway, October 15, 1830, and came to America to reside in 1851, to Wisconsin in 1852 and to Wyocena in 1869. In 1855 he married Cornelia Targosan at Whitewater, Wisconsin. To them were born seven children, all of whom survive him and were present with their father during his last sickness and followed his remains to their last resting place in Bonnet Prairie cemetery. They are: Mrs. Carrie Reierson of Lowville, Mrs. Anna Weeks of Vermillion, S. D., Mrs. Amelia Gunderson, of Wauconda, S. D., Halbert of Wyocena, Louse (sic) Slocumb of Alcester, S. D., Atty. H. A., of Portage and Thomas at home. Mrs. Gunderson died very suddenly three years ago the first of May. The funeral services were held Monday from the Lutheran church at Rio, Rev. Oleson of Milwaukee, conducted the service. One sister and brother survive him. The brother was present at the funeral. The sister lives in Nebraska and is too aged to make the trip here. Mr. Gunderson went to sea at the age of 18 and continued in that work until he came to the United States. He had been in the States while in this work and in 1850 was at New Orleans in a yellow fever epidemic when about 100 passengers on the boat died of that disease while the vessel was under quarantine. After coming to Wisconsin he engaged in various occupations until coming to Wyocena and buying his farm. Later he sold the farm and engaged in the mercantile business at Rio for a time. A few years ago he moved to the farm where he died. He was one of our substantial men, good farmer, neighbor, father and husband, honest and industrious and will be greatly missed by his extensive circle of friends. He was taken sick with pneumonia on Monday and was much better so that he sat up and took some nourishment. Friday he was stricken with paralysis and passed away Saturday.
