SOPHIA (ELLITHORPE) ROWLEY of Caledonia, Columbia Co., WI SUBMITTER: Karolyn Roberts EMAIL: gkrob@fullnet.com DATE: Apr 25, 1999 SURNAMES: ROBERTS, ELLITHORPE, JOHNSON, ROWLEY, HASKIN OBIT-—The Free Methodist: Chicago, June 29, 1887 Died June 3, 1887, in Caledonia, Columbia County, Wisconsin, Mrs. Sophia Rowley, aged 79 years, 5 months, and 22 days. Mrs. Rowley was converted and joined the M. E. Church when quite young, and has lived ever since a consistent, persevering, Christian life. Her illness has been the means, in the providence of God, of bringing the most of her seven children to follow her example. Her loss is deeply felt in the Free Methodist Church, where her lot had been cast the last few years of her life, and by all of her friends. She was always ready to give a helping hand to those in need of help, both by word of encouragement and more substantial means. For many years her active, sympathetic, Christian life has gained a multitude of friends. When the summons of death came it found her ready to go. Although unable to talk much during her sickness, she often gave evidence that she was prepared to meet her companion, and the loved ones who had gone on before. In her death the church has lost a valuable helper, and her children a loving Christian mother. Sister Rowley was living with her daughter, Mrs. Johnson, where she received all the care and attention that could be given during her illness, by loving hands trying to prolong so useful a life. The funeral sermon was preached in a grove near B. Johnson’s, by the Rev. Whitney, of Portage, from Timothy II 9:7,8.
