UNION "STEELE" CEMETERY 1863, Crawford County, Wisconsin (located on Merry Hill Road) In 1863 Scott Township saw the need to buy land on Irish Ridge for a buring ground to lay to rest their Civil War dead. However, the earliest known burial was that of Ada Elizabeth Green who died on Feb;28,1856 at the age of 1 year,2 months and 7 days. On Jan;28,1863,S.Y.Wanemaker and S.Green bought land from M.J.Davis and Emily Davis for five dollars. This land consisted of the North East corner of the South West Quarter of Section Three(3) Town Eight(8)North of Range Three(3)West,Thence running Ten(10)Rods West thence Eighteen(18)Rods South,Thence Ten(10)Rods East thence Eighteen(18)Rods North to the place of beginning, containing One Acre and Twenty Rods more or less. So,this buring ground, known as the UNION BURING GROUND come into existence and was well used from 1863 on. It wasn't untill 1876 that the County of Crawford started recording vital statistics of people so before 1876 any one who was buried in the UNION BURING GROUND was lost in time unless there was a stone to mark the grave. In 1885,it was noted that in the death records of Francis Julian that the UNION BURING GROUND was becoming known as "THE STEELE CEMETERY" named after CHAUNCY STEELE who was a celebrated Civil War Veteran and since then and up to this day it is better known as THE STEELE CEMETERY rather than the UNION BURING GROUND,however there are those who also know it as THE GREENE CEMETERY,but this is not as wide known as the former. Through the passing of time and the loss of popularity, the cemetery became uncared for and in the 1940's or 50's,the farmer that owned the land adjoining it decided on his own to bulldoze the cemetery and expand the field. He started to take the stones and markers out and bury them in an old house basement. He had done this and bulldozed about half of the cemetery when the law stoped him. What was left of the cemetery was fenced in and through the years it was some what kept up.But the remaining "bulldozed" section was let go to woods and brush. There was also a strip in the back that became farm land field. These are the people who are known to be at rest in the UNION"STEELE"CEMETERY Key: # indicates that this person's stone will soon be illegible * indicates that there is a stone but it can no longer be read Agates,Eva 1866--Oct;24,1891,age 25 yrs, wife of Oscar(no stone) *Bowen,E.A.
