Clayton: The deaths reported above all occurred in this enumeration district and the families all resided in the district on the 1st day of June 1880. Freeman: In the cases of Nos. 5 (James Parker), 6 (Ellen Parker), 8 (Sarah McQunny?) and 9 (Annie Olsen) reported on the schedule there is no family remaining. In cases of 4 (Alek Botton), 8 (Sarah McQunny?), 10 (Rachael Galt) and 14 (Andrew Johnson) as reported it is impossible to even guess at what caused the deaths. As one of the physicians lives some 30 miles from me it is impossible to get his opinion and the other knows but little more about it than any one does. Nos. 5 (James Parker) and six (Ellen Parker) are reported as dying with old age, I am unable to guess at any other cause unless 2 andit?? it to the attending physician. Haney: Physician that attended no. 1 (Lydia Alderman) above is dead. On line 10 (Not Named) was the illegitimate child of the woman on page 11 line 32. Was living at the time of its birth with her father and mother, page 3 line 16. Dr. Slover of this district reports no list of deaths kept. Line 2 the family lived out of the town at the time of the death of the child, moved in this town since. Town of Prairie du Chien: No. 3 (Sarah Foran) had not time as he etatice? to me. No. 5 (Frank Ting/Ping) accidental shooting he died? nearly instantly, did not speak often? the shot. No. 4 (Antoine Salone), 6 (Joseph Godfoy), 7 (Adaline Cayan) Dr.? Fordet? the attending physician had left here. 1st Ward, Prairie du Chien: Charles Lantry died in Santa Fe, New Mexico. 3rd Ward, Prairie du Chien: No. 3 Michael Skelly has been for many years a common and habitual drunkard. No. 12 John G. Bosch died of old age on the day of his death he walked a little complained of ??, layed down to rest and quietly died without a struggle. Prairie du Chien: Etta Eldredge died in Mankato?, Blue Earth Co., Minnesota. Supplemental is listed as S. D. No. 3, Enumeration District No. 68, Ohio. Thomas Pears died in hospital. Scott: All those that have died during the census years was settlers of the town in which they died in. Seneca: George Prince's name was crossed out with not further notes. Utica: Ella Smith crossed out without further notes. Wauzeka: Mary Horkheimer's name was crossed out; she is listed as dying in Madison, Dane Co., WI. Orville Row's family was listed as being residents of Finley, Turner Co., Dakota Territory. Notes: The mortality schedule was "supposed" to list those who died between June 1, 1879 and May 31 1880, while the population schedule was to list those actually living in the residence on June 1 1880, no matter what day the enumerator actually took the information. I understand that in some cases the enumerator may have been careless asking the question, or the informant didn't understand it, and there may be occasions when an individual may be found on both the mortality schedule and the population schedule. If the mortality schedule says someone died in July, it should mean July 1879, although it could have been July 1880. The cause of death includes diseases that are now known by other names. An example is "Gravel" which is now referred to as "Kidney Stones." For help in deciphering these disease names, there are numerous genealogy web sites that can be accessed at Cyndi's List - Medical and Medicine page: http://www.cyndislist.com/medical.htm While most of the microfilm was legible, some pages were extremely faded. As with any old handwritten records, handwriting can be very problematic. When questionable names were encountered, I utilized other sources, such as the census Population Schedule indexes for clues. If nothing could be located, I included a question mark (?) next to the data. When looking for a particular name, the researcher should try several spelling options. Potential problems exist with certain letters in the script such as S-L, H-K, M-N-W, p-f, n-m-r-u, o-a, etc. As with census records, the first and last names were spelled as the recorder thought they should be or how they sounded to him or her. An example would be Stevens and Stephens. In the majority of cases, I have recorded the names as spelled in the original records. I shall leave the interpretation of the proper spelling to reader rather than taking potentially incorrect liberties myself. These transcripts should never be used to substitute for the original records. No matter how carefully done, errors are always possible. If the record looks questionable, you should request a copy of the original schedule.
