GABRIEL'S PARISH—SECULAR CLERGY Bishop Flasch The appointment in 1891 of Eev. A. Philip Kremer as pastor marks the return of the secular clergy to the parish of St. Gabriel. An increase in the number of diocesan priests had made it possible for Bishop Flasch of LaCrosse, who succeeded Bishop Heiss in 1881, to relieve the Jesuits of the care of the parish, and thus to allow them to devote their time more exclusively to the increasing demands made upon them by the College. For seven years, Father Kremer exercised his pastoral duties at St. Gabriel's, unassisted. Fortunately, the burden he had assumed, was lightened somewhat by the erection of another parish in 1891, that of St. John Nepomucene, a Bohemian congregation in charge of a Rev. George Kiefner. In the first year of his pastorate, Father Kremer built the Columbian High School, which continued in existence till 1908. The record would seem to show that during all his time as pastor, he was seldom away from his parish. Later he was to manifest a like devotedness to duty, when as vicar-general of the diocese he made his little parish house at Genoa, Wisconsin, serve as his official headquarters for many years. There too, in 1935, Father Kremer, exemplary priest and efficient administrator, died at his post. Rev. Alphonsus Joseph Joerres succeeded Father Kremer as pastor in 1899. Sickly from the outset, Father Joerres found the burden unequal to his strength, and after a few years asked to be relieved. In 1907, Bishop Schwebach, who had succeeded Bishop Flasch in the See of LaCrosse, finally acceded to his request and sent to Prairie du Chien the Rev. Peter Becker. [Engraving - ST.
