COE on 05 Nov 1895 Obit is from the Kickapoo Valley Journel, 12 Oct 1905, Soldiers Grove, Crawford Co., Wi.: OBITUARY C.M. PETERSON At 7 o'clock, Thursday evening occured one of the saddest events in the history of our villiage. In the sudden and unexpected death of Carl Martin Peterson, Soldiers Grove has lost one of it's most progressive citizens and the community at large an upright business man and a true friend. As a business man he enjoyed the perfect confidence of all who knew him and as a friend he was ever faithfull and true. Mr. Peterson was born in Slodiers Grove, Wis., June 4, 1874. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Atley Peterson, one of our best known and highly respected families. Mr. Peterson having several times been a member of the Legislature and twice railroad commisioner. On November 5th, 1895 he was married to Miss Clemintine Coe of Viroqua, Wis. One son, Edward, age nine was born to them. Their married life though short was particularly a happy one. Seldom has one the privilige of seeing such an example of quiet, affectionate, high minded domestic life. He was certainly a worthy devoted husband and she a helpful trusting wife. There seemed always to be that gentle, almost touching companionship which is the real fruitage of true affection. At the time of his death Mr. Peterson held several positions of trust and honor. Beside his very responsilbilie position as cashier of the Soldiers Grove Bank, he was president of the Villiage, banker of the Modern Woodmen, financial secretary of the Foresters, and treasurer of the Odd Fellows. He was also identified with the beavers and Equitable Fraternal Union. As president of the Villiage he has been both wise and progressive. The improvements of our streets, the building of cement walks etc., testify as to the business like charecture of the present administration. Mr. Peterson was also a member if the Soldiers Grove Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was in every sense a christian gentleman. He did more than than confess christianity. He lived it to the best of his ability. As a business man, a friend, a father, husband and son, he followed to the best of his knowledge and power the essential tenets of christian ethics. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, October eight, at the Lutheran church, after which the remains were interred in the Soldiers Grove Cemetery. The services were under the auspices of the M.W.A. and I.O.O.F. The beutiful floral tributes were very dignafied and impressive. Rev. Gulbranson of Viroqua, spoke in the Norwegian language and Rev. Steman, of Viroqua, Rev. Peckham of this place and Rev. Merrifield of Platteville, in English. High tributes were paid the deceased and his family. His high qualities as a business man, a citizen and a friend recieved merited emphasis. Everything in the services was in keeping with the gentle quiet, yet manly life of Carl M. Peterson. It is difficult to find words to express the thoughts that come to one when some dear friend or relative is removed from the stage of earthly life. This is especially true when a useful and promising life is prematurely cut off. When the sun of some worthy life has gone down while it is yet day. A worthy life such as that of Mr. Peterson's which has been removed from among us in an example to all who desire to suceed and be happy in the success. While the material body passes away the spirit remains with us. That which is the real life cannot die. His capacity for business, his labor for honesty and integrtiy, his love of justice and devotion to duty,-these are qualities that abide with us and are immovable as the hills. They are in all, above all, and thru all, constantly helping to mould the life and shape the destiny of each member of this community. No greater truth was ever penned than that of the poet when he wrote. " That life is ever lord of Death And love can never lose it's own". The only way we can show our love and reverence for our departed friend is to strive to carry out his unfinished work and profit by the example of his life. Sometimes what seems our heaviest sorrow is in reality our greatest blessing if we could only accept the inevitable with quiet resignation, looking toward the future with a patient sincere hope, in the thought that no harm can come to a good man either in life or in death. We should live in that large unbounded faith described by Tennyson. "Strong Son of God, immortal love Whom we who have not seen thy face, By faith and faith alone embrace, Believing what we cannot prove." Carl M. Peterson is dead, yet in the language of the gospel, he still liveth. His strong and viral manhood, his integrity and honesty of purpose, abobe all his quiet unobtrusive gentleness are still present with all who knew him and will remain abiding beneficent in this community.
