BRODHEAD was born at Plattskill, Ulster county, N Y., December 24, 1809. He spent his boyhood days on a farm and studied civil engineering at West Point. He gained such a reputation in his native State that in 1852 he was appointed chief engineer of the Milwaukee & Mississippi Railroad and had charge of its construction. He located and named the village of Mazomanie. In 1857 he was elected President of the railroad company. The next year he resigned to look after his real estate. From 1863 to 1882 he was President of the First National Bank of Milwaukee. He was above the average height, with a large frame and massive head.
