After taking a college course, he studied chemistry under a specialist from 1846 to 1848. He then made a voyage around the world and traveled extensively in southern Australia. In 1852 he returned to Prussia and entered the army as a volunteer and left it as second lieutenant He came to the United States in 1855, and in 1857 arrived at Mazomanie. He opened a general store and carried on business here until 1882, when he retired and left the store in charge of his two sons. He still lives in Mazomanie.
