Obituary: Dane County, Wisconsin: William J. MELVIN ************************************************************************ Submitted by Ruth Ann Montgomery, April 2008 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ William J. Melvin, the veteran who was injured by the premature discharge of a canon at Madison on the 4th, died on the afternoon of the 5th. His chief injuries were internal although his arm was broken in three places and literally stripped of flesh. He belonged at Wausau and was employed about the capital. A curious coincidence is that Melvin was distantly related to John Betts, who was fatally injured in the same manner on the 4th of July eighteen years ago, and who was removed to the same house that Melvin expired in, where he died next afternoon.
