COOK, MADISON LOAN BROKER, COMMITS SUICIDE BY CUTTING HIS THROAT; FINANCIAL WORRY CAUSE. Head of Wiscosnin Association Slashes Himself in Bathroom of Boarding House this Morning. Was Depondent For A Week Taken to the cit hospital and dies at 2:45 this afternoon. Old Age Prevents Recovery His Son, W.W. Cook, instructor in University Law School Decedent Was Long an Educator in East and Came Here Last Spring In a fit of temporary insanity, brought on by ill-health and worry over the financial stringency, E.H. Cook, president of the Wisconsin association, committed suicide this morning by cutting his throat with a knife. The tragedy occurred in the bathroom of the boarding house of G.M. Pierce, 424 North Pinckney street. he had entered the bathroom upon rising, but failed to return as usual, and the suspicions of his wife were aroused. The door was found locked and no answer could be obtained to repeated calls. A domestic peered through the outside window, and saw the body lying on the floor in a pool of blood. TAKEN TO HOSPITAL Dr. George Keenan was immediately called and the door forced open. With blood streaming from a gash across his throat, and splashes of it on the wal, Mr. Cook was found, He was still breathing but the end was expected momentarily. Officer Krug and Coroner Lynch responded immediately when the police department was notified. The examimation by Dr. Keenan showed that there was still hope, so the ambulance was hastily summoned and the body taken to the hospital, where he died at 2:45 o'clock this afternoon. Latest reports from the hospital say there is little hope for recovery. WAS LONG A TEACHER. Mr. Cook was born in Maine in 1845 and had spent practically his entire life in the east, having been engaged in educational work. Because of ill health, induced by close application to teaching, he suffered several attacks of nervous prostration when principal in several Rhode Island schools. He then was heard several times to suggest suicide as the shortest way of relieving himself of worry, but necer made any attempt to harm himself. He came here last spring and hecame president of the Wisconsin association. Of late his health had again began to bother him, and according to his son, W.W. Cook, who is an instructor in the university law school, this physical ailment, coupled with worries over financial matters occasioned by the present stringency caused his mind to break down temporarily. DESPONDENT FOR A WEEK. He had been despondent for a week or more, but no one suspected him of designs to make away with himself. In spite of ill helath Mr. Cook was a big man, physically, weighing over 200 pounds. Mrs. C.W. Stoddard of Wingra Park is a daughter of Mr. Cook. With his wife he had been making his home since his arrial in Madison at the G.M. Pierce home, 424 North Pinckney street. The Wisconsin Association was organized several months ago with a capital of $60,000. Its purpose is to deal in loans, stocks, bonds and real estate. The incorporators were E.H. Cook, W.B.
