He was a University professor. Duffie, John A. MADISON - John A. "Jack" Duffie, age 80, died in Madison, on Saturday, April 23, 2005. He was born on March 31, 1925, in White Plains, N.Y., to Archibald Duncan Duffie and Lulie Atwater Duffie, the youngest of their five children. He grew up in upstate New York. He received BChE and MChE degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 until 1946, then worked briefly for DuPont before being called up again to act as a scientific liaison officer with the Office of Naval Research in Chicago during the Korean War. In 1947 Jack married Patricia Ellerton, the beginning of a happy marriage of more than 57 years. In 1954 Jack joined the faculty at UW to found the Solar Energy Laboratory in the College of Engineering. He was its director until he retired as Emeritus Professor of Chemical Engineering in 1988, and is recognized around the world as a pioneer in the solar energy field. He enjoyed his work with his colleagues, authored several engineering books with them and was working on a new edition when he died. As well as teaching and research, he was for 10 years an associate dean of the graduate school and head of the University-Industry Research program. He was a past president of the International Solar Energy Society and was editor of the society's journal for eight years. The Duffie family has a cabin in Vilas County, and for 40 years the whole family has been working on the cabin and the property. Jack loved the woods, lakes and wildlife, and spent as much time as possible there. The Duffies loved to travel, and worked and lived in Australia, England and briefly in Sweden. Music, art and opera were particular interests, and Jack served on the Board of Directors of Madison Opera. He never missed an opportunity to see an opera. Jack's hobbies were photography, woodworking and sailing. He was a dedicated runner and for many years enjoyed the company of good friends on daily runs. Family ancestry, particularly the McFie clan of Scotland, was another special interest. In 2002 Jack and Pat moved to Oakwood Village West where they enjoyed life in the retirement community. The family is grateful for the assistance of HospiceCare in the last weeks of Jack's life. Jack and Pat had three children, Neil, his wife, Colleen (Russell), and their children, Meghan, Patrick and Laura of Madison, Judy, her husband, Jim Schwarzmeier, and their sons, James and Jay of Eau Claire, and Susan, her husband, Paul Buse, and their children, Kristin and Michael of North Potomac, Md. Jack is also survived by his sisters, Myra Ledyard, Virginia Putnam and Nancy Shuster; a brother, C.R. Duffie; many nephews; and nieces. The family will receive visitors at the CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison, on Friday, April 29, 2005, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2005, at 1 p.m. in the auditorium at the OAKWOOD VILLAGE WEST retirement community in Madison.
