While serving in the Army, he was assigned to the 9th Infantry Division, 82nd Airborne Division, and the 101st Airborne, 327th Infantry Regiment as an artillery surveyor. While stationed in Nrenberg, Germany he met his wife, Evelyn Weinreich at a dance in the spring of 1960, whom he later married on Sept. 15, 1962, in Madison. It was love at first sight. Following retirement, he remained active by working with a magnificent crew at Wisconsin Aviation. George enjoyed taking trips to the Hughes family cabin on Lake Ruth every summer to spend time with family and friends. His compassion for wildlife was extraordinary and would extend to the rehabilitation and love for all creatures. This compassion has been instilled unto his children and grandchildren. He was an amateur ornithologist. He looked forward to having a cup of coffee each morning on the dock listening to the loons, waiting for the palliated woodpecker, and watching the eagles soar overhead. At night he was lulled to sleep by the songs of the whippoorwills. He also enjoyed other hobbies including being an amateur gemologist, aviation enthusiast, avid reader and historian. He was a member of the Airborne Association, American Postal Workers Union, NRA - Millennium Honor Roll, and Protect Animal Life.
