She was a Hospital Administrator Katzman, Leslie Rohde MADISON - Leslie Rohde Katzman, age 60, of Madison, passed away on Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, at Meriter Hospital following a brief battle with kidney cancer. She was born January 29, 1945, in Detroit Michigan the daughter of Paul and Dorothy Rohde. Leslie Katzman graduated from Beloit High School in 1963, and in 1966 received a diploma from the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing. She received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and in 1985 earned her Masters of Science in Health Service Administration. Leslie began her nursing career as a staff nurse and went on to direct cardiovascular services at Methodist Hospital before establishing the Heart Center of Meriter Hospital. For 38 years Leslie was involved in caring for people with heart disease in a variety of settings, as a clinician, a manager, an author and educator. Leslie worked to achieve many firsts in cardiovascular medicine. She was the first perfusionist in Madison, and under her direction Methodist Hospital was the first Madison heart center to perform coronary artery bypass grafts and Meriter Hospital was the first to offer a nationally accredited Chest Pain Center. Always concerned about the total care of patients, Leslie worked hard to establish programming to assist people after heart surgery or intervention. She designed cardiac rehabilitation programs and set up hospital libraries to give patients the tools and information they needed to modify lifestyles and live many more productive years. For her leadership and vision, Leslie won many awards and honors in cardiovascular medicine including the Alliance of Cardiovascular Professionals Spirit Award for outstanding contributions in the field and the American Heart Association Award for Administration. She also served in the early 1980s as the President of the National Society of Cardiopulmonary Technology, an organization she helped found. Leslie was a leader in the community as well. She served on the Board of Directors for HospiceCare, Inc. and at the time of her death was on the Hospice Board Executive committee. Passionate about excellent end of life care for all, Leslie was able to be at HospiceCare a short time during her illness. Leslie was a current member of TEMPO Madison, an organization for executive women, and she was an Acorn Society member of the Madison Community Foundation. Earlier in her life she was a volunteer for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, and she served on the Fitchburg Town Board. Door County was a special place for Leslie, as she often visited her second home in Egg Harbor and relished time spent at Cave Point and Pebble Beach. Having recently taken up kayaking, she was proud to have mastered last summer how to roll her water vehicle. Leslie was an expert on Door County fishing boats. Leslie also was an accomplished wood carver specializing in birds and Santas and earned recognition for this work. She is survived by one son, Brett R.
