She was born June 5, 1921, in Davenport, Iowa, to Charles and Henriette (Vondracek) Loufek. She grew up in Minneapolis, Minn., the eldest of four children. In 1938 she graduated valedictorian of her class from Marshall High School. After attending Stevens College for two years, Julia transferred to the University of Iowa to study art under the tutelage of Grant Wood. She graduated magna cum laude in 1942 with a degree in fine arts. Following graduation, Julia worked at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., for the United States Army Signal Corps. Her service there included work on breaking Japanese codes. Julia further contributed to the war effort when she served as an aviator in the Women's Army Service Pilots (WASP) until the end of World War II. On April 20, 1946, Julia married Kenneth R. Kimport and together they raised five children. Julia devoted her life and her energies to her children and her art. She was a loving and caring mother who never lost her ability to play with a child. She was an accomplished artist in the areas of painting, sculpture, lithography and lapidary. Her artistry also included the creation of beautiful gardens around her home, from which she received great joy. Being a lifelong learner, she amassed vast knowledge on a wide variety of subjects and had an amazing command of the English language. She possessed an honest and deep love of words. We will always fondly remember her as our "walking encyclopedia." Throughout her life, Julia was an adventuresome world traveler. She especially enjoyed exploring ancient ruins like those of Machu Picchu, Pompeii, and X'ian. Most of all, Julia will forever be remembered for her loving, tender ways and her quiet sense of integrity. Julia was preceded in death by her parents; a newborn son; and her beloved son, Charles.
