He was born on April 6, 1905, in the little town of Walshut, Baden, Germany, on the Swiss border. His parents both died by the time he was 14, and he and his three siblings were raised by their aunt. In 1927, after graduating from electrical engineering school, he made his way to the United States. Olga Johanna Mueller, his lovely German girlfriend, had preceded him to New York, and on June 15, 1929, they were married in Detroit, Mich. At the start of the Depression, he had found a position with General Motors designing transformers for the newly introduced steel welding of automobile bodies. Most of the following 40 years with General Motors were in the production engineering of cars, World War II bombers, tanks, and trucks. After the war, he and Olga sent countless Care packages to war-ravaged Europe. Otto and Olga lived in Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich., raising a daughter, Irmgard (Emy). Through her and her husband, Robert Andrew, they enjoyed five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. As Olgas health deteriorated with Parkinson's disease, he faithfully nursed her until she died in 1980. His good friend, Sofie Mueller, and he moved to Madison in 1984, and had good years traveling and visiting German friends together before she passed away in 1995. Otto spent his life caring for others, working hard at any task at hand, being frugal for himself, and generous to others. He was multi-talented, creative, and exemplified the finest of our immigrant heritage. His intense love for family was shown in his generosity for their education, and his daily inquiry in later years about each grandchild and great-grandchild. He is survived by his daughter, Irmgard Andrew; grandchildren, Rebecca Andrew Spear, Sarah Andrew (Brian Frykenberg), Jennifer Andrew Kinder (Vaughn), Miles B. Andrew (Stacy) and Nathan R. Andrew (Janet); and 12 wonderful great- grandchildren. Otto was preceded in death by his wife, Olga; his son-in-law, Dr. Robert Andrew; his brother, Rudolf; his sisters, Ella and Frieda; and his dear friend and companion, Sofie Mueller. He will be deeply missed by all. As he was able to, see most of the family two weeks ago, and in keeping with his wishes, an informal celebration of his life with memory sharing will take place Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, in Madison.
