MADISON - John R. Swanton, age 83, a lifelong Madison resident, died unexpectedly at home on Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003. He was born on July 4, 1920, in Madison, the son of Ray and Margaret Swanton. He married Evelyn Jacobsen on July 10, 1943, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in San Antonio, Texas, and they were married more than 50 years. John served in the Army Air Corps during World War II from 1943 until 1946 and in the Army Air Corps Reserves from 1946 until 1949 as a staff sergeant. John worked for First National Bank from 1940 until his retirement in 1980. He was a lifelong member of Grace Episcopal Church, Madison Elks Lodge No. 410, and past member of the East Side Business Men's Association. John was a passionate Badgers fan, never missing a home football game since 1946. He also enjoyed Cottage Grove home talent baseball games, especially in recent years when he was able to watch his grandson, Jay play for the team. He is survived by his seven children, Kathy (Bill) Reid of Grand Forks, N.D., Janeen (Mike) Stassi of Cottage Grove, Bonnie (Michael) Dauck of Mazomanie, Nancy (Brent Petrie) Swanton of Anchorage, Alaska, Jane (Jack) Ripley of Virginia Beach, Va., Mary Kleppin of Cross Plains, and Robert Swanton of Madison; eleven grandchildren, Matthew and Michael Reid, Mary (Patrick) Samson, Mindi (Jim Sheahan) Stassi, Jay Stassi, Jennifer (Joe) Shell, Brenna and Gretchen Dauck, Sean Ripley, and Alex and Alison Kleppin; two great-granddaughters, Baelee and Addison Shell; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Evelyn; two grandchildren, Maghan Stassi and Samuel Dauck; and an infant brother, Charles Henry Swanton. Funeral services will be held at the GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, on Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2003, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Bob Koskela presiding. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2003, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to Port St. Vincent, Grace Episcopal Church Homeless Shelter or Luke House. The family would like to thank all of his friends, especially Skip, Shirley, Gale, and Barb, for their friendship and support, particularly following the loss of his beloved wife. His presence will be missed by his family, of which he was so proud.
