Tate was born Oct. 26, 1909, in Boaz, Ala., the son of Jane Street Whitman and Edward Fenno Whitman. He was the youngest of their 13 children. He graduated with a B.A. in, political science from Duke University in 1929 and subsequently received his M.A. in political science and his Ph.D. in economics, also from Duke University. At Duke he met Luisita Dye, a graduate student in French literature, and they married in 1936. Tate's first faculty job was at The Citadel in Charleston, S.C., where he taught from 1936 to 1947. In 1947 he joined the faculty of Emory University in Atlanta. There he earned the respect and admiration of colleagues and students for his high standards of scholarship, his devotion to teaching, and his energetic participation in university governance. He served as chair of the Economics Department and as chair of the Emory University Senate. He was an active member of the Southern Economics Association and the American Association of University Professors. He was the co-author of three authoritative books in the field of finance, and in 1960 he was named the first Charles Howard Candler professor of economics. After retiring from Emory in 1978, Tate was a visiting professor at Davidson College and a teacher at Emory's Senior University. In 1998 Tate and Luisita moved to Madison, where they joined First Congregational United Church of Christ. Tate was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Luisita. He is survived by two daughters, Melinda (Phillip) Certain of Madison, and Ernestine Whitman (Howard Niblock) of Appleton; four grandchildren, Andrew (Margaret), Heather and Laura Certain, and Elliott Niblock; and a great-grandchild, Graham Certain. The family thanks the staff of the University Hospital and Clinics, of Attic Angel Place, and of the Don and Marilyn Anderson HospiceCare, for their competence, support, and kindness during Tate's last weeks and months.
