CPL US ARMY WWII 28 Jan 1924- 06 Apr 2004 Mielcarek, Francis W. "Oscar" MADISON - Francis W. "Oscar" Mielcarek, age 80, of Madison, passed away on Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at St. Marys Care Center. He was born on Jan. 28, 1924, in Madison, the son of Francis and Anita (Houlihan) Mielcarek. Oscar married Alice Rhode on Aug. 30, 1960. He graduated from Madison East High School in 1942. Oscar proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1943 until 1945. He was employed as a mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service in Madison for many years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of St. Dennis Catholic Church for many years. He and Alice spent their winters in Fort Myers, Fla. Oscar enjoyed golfing and was a past member of the Lake Windsor Couples League. He also was an avid UW-Madison Badgers Basketball and Football fan. Oscar is survived by his wife, Alice; a sister, Dolores Furnari; a brother-in-law, Anton Kracunas; many special nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and nine brothers and sisters, Mildred Kraucunas, Bernard (Muriel) Mielcarek, Lawrence (Blanche) Robertson, Harry (Esther) Robertson, Hector (Vera) Berg, Milo (Delores) Robertson, William (Marion) Cherry, Glyne (Louise) Robertson and Joseph Furnari. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 13, 2004, with Father Kent Schmitt presiding. Burial will follow at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, with military rites being conducted by the Madison Area Veterans Firing Squad. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a memorial fund that will be established in Francis's name.
