Bender, Susan G. MADISON - Susan G. Bender passed away on Sunday, March 5, 2006, at the St. Marys Care Center, just days before her 102nd birthday. She was born on March 17, 1904, in Chicasaw County, Iowa, to Ole and Lassina Paulson. Susan lived and worked on the family farm during her childhood. She moved to Madison in 1925, where she met her future husband, Delbert B. Bender Sr. In the late 1930s, Susan operated a diner on E. Washington Ave., along with her sister, Bertha. She was employed by the Oscar Mayer Company for 25 plus years. Susan lived through the great flu epidemic of 1918 and told many stories about the epidemic. She remembered the sinking of the Titanic, the Great Depression and Charles Lindberg. Susan worked hard all her life, sacrificing for those she loved. Because she looked for the good in everyone, she was often called upon to share private confidences. We will all miss having coffee with her around the kitchen table, playing cards and the words of wisdom she so willingly gave us and we so humbly took. Susan is survived by three sons, Delbert (Veronica) Bender Jr. of King, Richard (Dixie) Bender of Ridgeway, and Donald (Joann) Bender of Madison; three daughters, Arlene (John) Patzer and Linda Gerber, both of Madison, and Sharon (Willard) Wills of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; 21 grandchildren; many great- grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert Bender Sr., on June 16, 1976; four brothers; and five sisters. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 11, 2006. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. The family wishes to thank the staff of St. Marys Care Center for their comfort and loving care they gave to their mother/ grandmother, as well as the care and understanding they provided to all of her family.
