W. Phelps. Inside the concordance etc. is listed as by Rev. William Blackwood,D.D., LL.D. and Rev Alfred Nevin D.D., Published by Union Publishing Company,Chicago, 335 Wabash Ave. The front cover is loose from the body of the book and the pages are very old and yellowed. Toward the back is a marraige certificate (bound as part of the book). I would guess that this bible was a wedding present. On the certificate lists the marriage of Geo. W. Phelps, Randolph, Wis, to Miss Mary E. Hartwell, Randolph, Wis. at Randolph, 19th of November, 1865. In the presence of Mrs. Smith and Miss Smith. Signed Smith J.P. Randolph, Wis. Inside the pages were very yellowed newspaper clippings( no dates): 1 - CHILD BURNED ON A HEATER Daughter of Lieut. T.S. Phelps in serious Condition. A Two-year-old daughter of Lieut. T.S. Phelps was badly burned about the face and hands last evening by falling on a heater. The child's condition is said to be quite serious. 2 - FOUR LITTLE GIRLS ARE PALL BEARERS The large number of floral tributes and the many cars in line as the cortege left for Fort Howard Cemetery yesterday afternoon indicated the sorrow caused by the death of Lawrence Murray Phelps, 3 1/2-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Hart Phelps, who drowned Saturday night. Four little girls were pallbearers. The Rev. Torrance T. Phelps conducted the services. Lawrence was an unusually bright child and loved by all who knew him. 3 - Mr. and Mrs T.S. Phelps announce the marriage of their daughter, Madeline, to Francis A Couvillion, which took place Friday, Feb. 13. 4 - Mr. and Mrs Hart Phelps of Milwaukee, returned home after visiting Mr. and Mrs. C. Phelps. Mrs Matt Bi_ek, of Marinnette, is a house guest at the Phelps home. 5 - Mr. and Mrs S.T.(I'm positive this should be T.S.)Phelps of this city are the parents of a baby girl born last week. Mr. Phelps is a member of the firm of Phelps & Comer. 6 - RECOVERING SLOWLY FROM BULLET WOUND Hartwell Phelps, Who Was Accidentally shot Sunday at Baird's Creek, is recovering from the accident slowly. The physicians have been unable as yet to locate the bullet. The wound inflicted is not serious but is painful. The Accident happened while a number of boys were fishing and hunting. 7 - Conley-Phelps -- The marriage of Miss Irene Conley and Hartwell F.(should be S)Phelps was solemnized Saturday evening at 8 o'clock in the parsonage of the First Baptist church the Rev. S. W. Phelps, officiating. The bride was attended by Miss Harriet Phelps*. William Bauraim* was best man. The bride was attired in navy blue silk and carried bride's roses. The bridesmaid wore a black satin and carried roses. Following the ceremony a reception was held in the home of Mr. and Mrs. P.F.(Should be T.S.) Phe*Hattie and William later married and moved to Portland, Ore. 8 - Entertains Party of Friends-- Hart Phelps entertained about forty of his friends last evening at his home on Stuart street. Some very pleasing musical selections were rendered and refreshments were served at a late hour. All those present report a very good time. 9 - WAUKESHA BRIEFS Marriage licenses have been issued here to Willard V. Spaulding and Viola O. Carpenter, town of Pewaukee; Fred C. Heller and Florence McCall, Oconomowoc; Robert A Jahnke, 727 Marshall st., and Shirley M Melius, 220 Branch st.; Sylvester J. Svehlek, 1313 S. 74th st., West Allis, and Mary Ann Schmidt, town of New Berlin; Russell N Bartlett, Oconomowoc, and Gloria J. Phelps*, Town of Oconomowoc; Harry M. Benz, town of Mequon, and Doris H. Oldenburg, town of Brookfield; Walter E. Stern, town of Lisbon, and Rut*My husband's parents, so this is dated to the 1940's. I can provide a closer date if you need me to. 10 - This is a half page from the newspaper THE MILWAUKEE JOURNAL dated Friday, July 23, 1926. It features a photo of 7 babies (one of which is my mother-in-law Gloria) There are also other articles but no local names appear in them. There's an interesting article(incomplete) about U.S. owned boats selling liquor during trips to Europe. On the other side of this page there was one article which I am including. Under the Picture of the babies is the following article : READY FOR JUDGE Proud Mothers are awaiting with confidence the outcome of the baby contest in connection with the American Legion exposition. Many mothers have entered their offspring. The upper picture shows some of the young hopefuls lined up awaiting the judges at the exposition headquarters, 194 Third st., and enjoying ice cream cones. The lower picture shows one of the decorated perambulators* which will participate in the baby parade. The babies in the upper picture, left to right are: Lillian Daniels, 23 months, 743 Fifteenth av.; Lila Lehnhoff, 16 months, 917 Ninth st; James Cunningham, 9 monhts, 529 Fifty-first av., West Allis; Gloria Jean Phelps, 8 months, 3004 Paulina st., the*(baby carraige) 11- A FIREMAN 37 YEARS Lucas A. Van Toor, assistant chief of the fire department, will complete 37 years of service on the department Aug. 1. He joined Aug.1 1889 and was assigned to Truck Co. No. 3, 1121 Galena st. He was made a district chief 25 years ago and has been assistant chief since Mar. 1. 1925 There were two telegraphs in the bible: 1 - The first one has no date. It informs T.S. Father died this morning funeral Monday ten thirty AM H.E.Phelps 2 - This telegram was to My husband's grandfather. Cannot figure who this about. Hart's mother would have been 102 years old. But it appears that that is who they are talking about. This is dated: 1960 OCT 10 PM 4 10 PR LLH090 NL PD=PORTLAND ORG 10= HART PHELPS= 3905 KEMSINGTON AVE TAMPA FLO=(This address has a line through it in pencil and 3913 Dale Ave. printed above in what looks like Gloria's handwriting) DEAR IRENE AND HART, DEAR LITTLE MOTHER LEFT US SUNDAY MORNING EARLY.
