Obituary of Mary Philena "Mamie" WILBER 1880-1888 Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives October 8, 2000 by Roberta D. Calhoun < nantasket@earthlink.net > *********************************************************************** *********************************************************************** Surnames: Wilber, Calhoun, Davis, Campbell Source: Watertown Rep, 29 Feb 1888 OBITUARY Mamie P., second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. [Pamelia Adsit Calhoun] Wilber, of the Fifth ward, died of diptheria Saturday forenoon last, Feb. 25, 1888, in the eighth year of her age, after an illness of one week. Mamie, for one of her years, was a child possessed of rare beauty of character, and had become a great favorite with all who knew her. She was as nearly perfect child as ever fell to the lot of parents to possess, and her unusually bright, sunny, cheerful disposition naturally rendered her not only the pet of the household, but of the whole neighborhood. A prominent favorite and leader in her class she had a most passionate love for her school and especially her teacher, Miss L. Davis, whom she called for almost with her dying breath. She was a perfect example of robust health until taken sick with symptoms finally developing into diptheria that baffled the best medical skill to counteract and from which she only found relief by being called to rest with her Savior. "As the sweet flower that scents the morn, But withers in the rising day; Thus lovely was this child's dawn, Thus swiftly fled her life away." She was born in the city of Watertown, October 23, 1880, and was therefore 7 years, 4 months and 2 days old at the time of her decease. Through little Mamie's death truly a light was gone out of her home and her fond parents called upon to lay their loved one away, have the warm sympathy of the community in their deep affliction. The thought that the "Lord giveth; the Lord taketh away," must be their comfort. "It is not death to die; To leave this weary road, And midst the brotherhood on high, To be at home with God." The funeral was held Monday morning at 10 o'clock, from the family home. Rev. J.M. Campbell, officiating, the remains being deposited in Oak Hill cemetery. *********************************************************************** USGENWEB ARCHIVES NOTICE: These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation.
