The Hilson School was located in New Haven Township in section 2. The school took on the name Hilson from the man whose land that the school sat on. Nelson Christ Hilson. His house was located just east of where the 1st school building was situated. The original Hilson School building was built on a wood frame in the late 1800’s. It sat just east about ¼ of a mile east from where the new (current) building was built. The “old” building was used until 1917 when a new brick building was built. The front of the school building faced the North. The town road at that time ran to the North of the School. Today the town road runs on the South side of the building. When the school districts were consolidated, the building was sold to private owners in 1958 and converted into a home. This one room school building housed up to 78 students at one time with two teachers. After completing school, students then went onto high school at either Boyceville or Clear Lake. Teachers who taught at the Hilson School were Vivian (Francis) Solberg, Eileen (Breslin) Sempf, Isabelle Moen, and Elva (Burril) Van Blaricom, Howard Olson, and Kathryn (Peabody) Hybben, Lucy Peacore, Esther Aale, Mariam Lawlar, Crescense Biddle, Joyce Hedlund, Freida (Schmidt) Canfield, Hilda Kuhn, Lyla Larrabee, Alice Anderson, Marie (Bresln,) Wagner, Vurl Scovel, Elsie (Wood) Warner, Joyce Hedlund, Hulda Kuhn, Lila Larabee, Arthur Eggman, and Frieda Schmidt. Children walked as much as 4 miles to school. Many chores at the school were dependant upon student. Such as hauling in wood and tending the fire.
