Dalton, 80, Early Pioneer ---------------------------------------o------------------------------------ 70 YEARS OF LIFE OF EARLY RESIDENT SPENT IN DUNN COUNTY ---------------------------------------o------------------------------------ E.J. Dalton, for over 70 years a resident of Dunn county, and a prominent man in the social life of the community passed away at his home on the north side in the village Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 o'clock, after being in poor health for the past three years. His long residence in Dunn county and his legion of friends testifies to the high regard in which he was held in this section. Elbert Joy Dalton was born in Genefeo, Illinois, October 30, 1860, the son of Steven G. Dalton and Rachael Withrow. After spnding ten yeas of his youth in Illinois he came to Dunn county, where he has continued to make his home for over 70 years. He attended the Fox Settlement schools, and later engaged in farming in Grant and Sand Creek townships. For 27 years he served as foreman in lumber camps in Minnesota and Wisconsin, spending the summer months at his occupation of farming. On November 22, 1885, he was united in marriage to Clarissa Louella See at the home of his sister, Mrs. Shipley, Bloomer. Both Mr. and Mrs. Dalton were active members of the Methodist church, and Mr. Dalton was an active and sincere worker in the local I.O.O.F. lodge for many years. In 1935 Mr. and Mrs. Dalton celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, the event being attended by over 200 of their relatives and friends. Preceding him in death was his wife, who passed away several years ago. Surviving are two brothers and one sister, as follows: Steven Dalton, Chetek; William Dalton, Bend, Oregon; and Mrs. Amelia Divvers, Eugene, Oregon. One son and two daughters survive, namely: Arthur Dalton, at home; Mrs. Viola Eliason, Sawyer; and Mrs. Lillian Tietz, New Auburn. Also surviving are five grandchildren: Trafford and Edgar Gregerson, Elton Eliason, LeRoy Tietz and Mrs. Freeman Anderson. One great granddaughter, Dianne Anderson, Colfax, also survives. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at the Dalton home at 12:30 o'clock, followed by services at the Methodist church at 1:00 o'clock conducted by Rev. W. T. Walker. Interment will be made in the Popple Creek cemetery. Services at the cemetery will be conducted by the I.O.O.F. Lodge members. -- Typed as found in the Colfax Messenger - August 28, 1941
