Sommermeyer was born in Gardelegen, Germany, in 1830. He came to Madison, Wis., in the year 1858, and 1862 to Eau Claire. He was for years engaged in general merchandising. He moved in 1882 to Grant county, Dakota, and was on a cattle ranch. In 1887 he returned to Eau Claire and engaged in several kinds of business. He married Sophia Charlotte Huebner in 1862, who was born at Gardelegen, Germany. He died in 1912 and his wife died in 1913. Of their five children, Miss Charlotte is a noted musician, Helen is the wife of Mr. William E. Steinberg, also a noted musician, who conducts a very successful music store in the city of Eau Claire. The only son, Edward F., is a dentist of prominence, also residing in Eau Claire. --Taken from "The History of Eau Claire County, 1914, Past & Present", page 569.
