Hills Deposition of Amelia Devenport Travis State of Wisconsin ) )ss County of Eau Claire ) On the 9th day of March A.D. 1868 before me a Justice of the Peace within and for the county and state aforesaid, personally appeared Amelia Travis a resident of the town of Bridge Creek in the county and state aforesaid, aged 39 years, a person who I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit who being by me first duly sworn according to law deposes and says; that she resides as aforesaid and is aged as aforesaid; that she was acquainted in his life time with David O. Hills, deceased, who was a Private in Company "I" 61st Regiment N.Y. Vols. And is acquainted with Euphemia Jobs, who was the widow of said David and is the guardian of the children of said David, and as such guardian is seeking application for a pension for said children; that she was acquainted with said David for Ten years prior to his death and has been acquainted with said Euphemia for thirty years last past; that she was present on the eight day of April 1860 at a certain house in the town of Alma in Jackson county state of Wisconsin and saw said Euphemia delivered of a male child; that at that time said David and Euphemia were living together in lawful wedlock as man and wife; that said child was named Charles Henry Hills; that she has known said child continuously since that time and said child is the identical child now called by that name; that she well recollects the date of said birth and the same is as is above stated. She further says that she has no interest in the said claim of Euphemia Jobs as such guardian for such pension as aforesaid. Amelia Travis (statement of Notary obscured by Certified Statement of Clerk of the Circuit Court of Eau Claire, which follows) State of Wisconsin, ) I, Martin Daniels, clerk Eau Claire County, ss. ) of the Circuit Court of Eau Claire County, certify, that H.S. Baldwin , whose name is subscribed to the annexed and foregoing certificate of acknowledgment, was, at the date thereof, a Justice of the Peace within and for said County, and duly authorized by the Laws of this State to take the same; that I am acquainted (seal) with the hand-writing of said H.S. Baldwin and believe his signature, subscribed thereto, to be genuine; and that the said is executed and acknowledged according to the Laws of the State of Wisconsin. In Testimony, Whereof, I hereunto set my Hand and affix the Seal of the said Court, at Eau Claire, the 10th day of March, A.D. 1868 Martin Daniels, Clerk. Submitters notes: Euphemia and Amelia were daughters of Brazilla (also spelled Barzillah) and Mary O. Devenport/Davenport, from Onondaga County, New York and later Madison County, New York. On the 1880 census of Fairchild (Dist 139), Eau Claire County, WI, Brazilah Devenport is in the household of his son John. Amelia was the wife of John A.
