Cowan Was Department Member 23 Years William G. Cowan, 74, pioneer resident of Eau Claire and for many years a member of the fire department here, died at his home at 527 Grand Avenue West Tuesday morning after an illness of several months. Mr. Cowan, who retired from fire department Oct. 1, 1929, was born in Canada Nov. 3, 1839. He came to the United States when a young man and settled in the vicinity of Eau Claire, later coming to the city to live. He was employed for many years by the Daniel Shaw Lumber Company as a teamster. During the later years of this work he drove the team which pulled the fire apparatus which was housed in one of the buildings on the Shaw property. He entered the fire department as a regular member on May 1, 1906 at No. 5 station on Water street, where he remained until June 15, 1919 when he was transferred to No. 2 station where he was employed as driver until his retirement. Mr. Cowan is survived by his widow, two sons, William, of Seattle, and John, of Eau Claire; three daughters, Mrs. Mable Van Searl of Seattle, Mrs. C.J. Holcomb, of Long Beach, Calif., and Mrs. Oscar Bain of Eau Claire, and five grandchildren. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
