Submitted by: Kent Robarge 29 September 2003 ************************************************************************ Derge, Julius August Obituary of Julius Derge in April 27, 1932 Eau Claire Leader (Eau Claire, Eau Claire County, WI) Julius Derge, 78, Pioneer of City, Succumbs Julius Derge, 78, veteran cigar manufacturer and a resident of this city since 1875, died here last night. Mr. Derge was a pioneer manufacturer of this city, but had retired from active business many years ago. Mr. Derge was born in Germany in 1853. He acquired his education in the public schools of his native country, and came to the United States in 1870, spending a year in Rolling Prairie and several more in Milwaukee before settling in Eau Claire. In partnership with his brother, Ferdinand, Mr. Derge established a cigar manufacturing business, the partnership continuing until the death of his brother in 1891. For many years he conducted business alone, but later retired. In 1879, Mr. Derge was married to Miss Anna Kneer, who survives him. He is also survived by three sons, Frank, of Eau Claire, Mathias, of Warren, O., and Julius, of New York. During his lifetime, Mr. Derge was a member of Freiden Lodge, No. 254, Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Funeral arrangements have not yet been made.
