Obituary of B. D. Hanson (date and newspaper unknown but assumed to be Mauston Star) B. D. Hanson, eidtor and publisher of the Mauston Star, died at his home in this city about 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, July 31, 1934, aged 60 years, 7 months and 2 days. Monte hanson, as he was known to all, will be missed not only by his immediate family, but by the hundreds of sincere friends throughout Juneau County. Beaumont Devere Hanson was born in Wonewoc, Wis., Dec. 29, 1873. His parents were the late Joseph T. and Sarah L. Randall Hanson, both pioneer settlers of Juneau county. His father was then engaged in the general merchandise business there but shortly after his birth the family moved to Toledo, Ohio, later to Sandusky, and then to Chicago where they lived several years before coming to Mauston. His boyhood days were spent in this city and he graduated from the local high school with the class of 1895. After graduating he learned the printing trade in the office of the Mauston Star, which profession he followed for over 40 years. During his younger days, Mr. Hanson traveled extensively, visiting most of the states in the union, but always Wisconsin was his favorite, and Mauston the finest city. To him it was always home. On August 20, 1899, he was united in marriage in this city to Pauline C. Betz of Eau Claire. Three sons were born to them, DeVere T. who died at the age of 20 months, Dr. Harold B. Hanson and John B. Hanson of this city. They made their home here until 1906 when they moved to Minneapolis, Minn., where they lived until returning here in the fall of 1914. In 1917 he bought the Mauston Star from Col. John Turner, taking possession August 1, and since that time has been editor and publisher of this paper --- exactly 17 years to the day. His death is a distinct loss to the newspaper profession. His wife, Pauline C. Hanson, and his son, John B. Hanson, have been associated with him in his newspaper work since he bought the Star, and they will continue to carry out his policies in publishing the paper. Under the editorship of B. D. Hanson the Mauston Star became one of Wisconsin's best known weekly newspapers, and is classed as one of the better weeklies of the United States. He took a great pride in his work, and was skilled at his trade, having an unusually fine sense of style for all types of printing. He was a writer of marked ability. As an editor he was never afraid to voice his honest opinion on any issue, and people respected him for it. They always knew how he stood on every question of public interest. A clear picture of his ideals in editing this paper may be found in the following lines which run under the mast head of the paper, The Mauston Star, "The Paper of the People --- Unbiased and Unprejudiced." "We boost for every new and every old business enterprise in this city. And we are the only newspaper that does. We stand on our own feet and are not controlled by some clique or gang, faction, club or private enterprise." His interest in the welfare of the farmers was always manifest and he repeatedly said that the prosperity, not only of Mauston, but of the entire country, was dependent upon the farmers. For many years the Star has carried the following lines -- "Pay the Farmer a fair price for his farm produce and you strengthen the backbone of the Nation." He was a member of Northern Light Lodge, No. 81, F. & A. M. of this city. He had been a member of the Masonic Order for nearly 40 years. He survived by his wife, Pauline C. Hanson, two sons, Dr. Harold B. Hanson and John B. Hanson, and by five grandchildren, Ethel Jane and Jo Ann Hanson, and John D., Sally Ann and Monte D., all of this city. He also leaves one brother, Atty. Frank H. Hanson, also of this city. Funeral services were held under Masonic auspices at the Masonic temple Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. A. B. Nimz, pastor of the Methodist church, delivered the address. The Masonic services were delivered by W. N. Eaton of Necedah. Burial was in Oakwood cemetery. B. D. Hanson was a fine man. He was a lover of the great outdoors, of the flowers, shrubs and trees, and of the birds and other denizens of the woods. He was familiar with them all. Many pleasant hours were passed by him observing nature's wonders. He was a kindly, gentle, friendly man, a good husband, a good father, a good neighbor, a good citizen and a good friend --- there could be no better. He was devoted to his home, his wife and his children, and was never more happy than when they were all together, with the grandchildren whom he loved so dearly.
