Submitted by: Kent Robarge 29 September 2003 ************************************************************************ Korn, William Thursday, Dec 28, 1916 Eau Claire Leader HL: William Korn is Called by Death, Early Pioneer Resident of Eau Claire Summoned by Death Yesterday Morning "Wm. Korn, one of the first settlers in Eau Claire, passed away very suddenly yesterday morning at 3 o'clock at his home, 834 Second Ave. Mr. Korn was over town Tuesday afternoon and that evening sat around his fireside apparently in fairly good health considering his advanced age. Next morning when he awoke he complained of not feeling well and a physician was summoned, but death came soon after, the final summons being due to heart failure and the infirmities of old age. The deceased was a native of Germany where he was born March 27, 1829, therefore was in the eighty-seventh year of his earthly pilgrimmage. He came to America in the year 1846, residing for about three years in New York, coming to Eau Claire in the year 1849, residing here continuously since that time. Mr. Korn was a tailor by trade and for many years conducted a merchant tailoring establishment on South Barstow St. where the Palace of Sweets is now located. He retired from active business about thirty- five years ago, having accumulated enough of this world's goods to keep him for the balance of his days. In fact he became the owner of considerable property. He erected one of the first business buildings in Eau Claire. It was one of the pleasant boasts of Mr. Korn that he made the clothing for Hon. Wm. Pitt Bartlett, when the latter was a young man although Mr. Korn is but a few months older. The deceased often referred to the fact, too, that he made Mr. Bartlett's wedding suit. Mr. Korn was preceded in death by his wife, who passed away about twelve years ago. He is survived by two sons, William H. and John P., both of this city. It is said that Mr. Korn suffered a stroke of heart affliction while attending services at St. Patrick's church a week ago last Sunday, since which time he had appeared to be failing in health. Announcement of the time and place of the funeral will be made later."
