It started on line 23 of sheet 759 in M653-1408 and then moved to line 1 of sheet 157, M653-1407. I am fairly confident that this transcription is all of Alto although I did notice single pages of other locations randomly located on the two reels of microfilm. The Town of Alto had a fairly large representation of emigrants from Holland. I am not sure I transcribed their surnames correctly since their names were strange to me (Swedish/Norwegian heritage). I would recommend a second transcriber from the Fond du Lac area or at least someone familiar with Dutch names. ************************************************************************ Ashford: The only difficulties I had in this transcription were the flowery, old hand-writing, and the Central European names. ************************************************************************ Auburn: Page 72 of this transcription was labeled as being "Ashford." However, it appears this was only an error of the enumerator (who also did Ashford). All household numbers are consistent with those of Auburn. I've added a transcriber note of this discrepancy. ************************************************************************ Byron: The following is written on page 165 (sheet 297) of the census of Byron. This is to certify that the within consisting of 41 ½ sheets of Schedule No. 1 and one sheet of Schedule No. 3 and eleven sheets of Schedule No. 4 and one sheets of Schedule NO 5 and one and one half of sheets of Schedule No. 6 of the Eighth United States census. Confirming the Towns of Ashford, Auburn, Oceola, and Byron in the County of Fond du Lac and State of Wisconsin is made according to my oath and instructions to the best of by knowledge and belief. Subscribed and sworn before me the whole No of pages 222 This the 13 day of August 1860 C.P. Phelps //s// George More Asst U.S. Marshal Justice of the Peace Schedule No. 1. 165 Schedule No. 3 4 Schedule No. 4 4 4 Schedule No. 5 4 Schedule No. 6 5 ************************************************************************ City of Fond du Lac, Ward 1: The enumerator's handwriting is often difficult to interpret. ************************************************************************ City of Fond du Lac, Ward 3: The last digit of the sheet numbers is not visible in the microfilm. It appears that some sheet numbers are for single pages, and others are the A-B system for two pages. The sheet numbers in my transcription match the microfilm when all the digits of the sheet number are visible. ************************************************************************ Friendship: This is recorded on the page following the last entry of Friendship, Fond du Lac County, State of Wisconsin, 1860 census: “State of Wisconsin County of Fond du Lac I, Francis D. McCarty, Assistant Marshal for the 3rd Assembly District of the County of Fond du Lac and State of Wisconsin being duly sworn, do certify that the foregoing from page one to page one hundred and eighty seven inclusive is a correct return of the enumeration of the inhabitants of said 3rd Assembly District of Fond du Lac County as made by me according to my Oath of Office and instructions to the best of my knowledge and belief. Sworn & Subscribed before me at the City of Fond du Lac in same county this 21st day of July A.D. 1860 //s// A.H. Bouselman Notary Public Fond du Lac County ************************************************************************ Marshfield: Marshfield is on both microfilm reels M653-1407 and 1408. It starts on the last sheet of the Town of Byron, M653-1407, and then jumps to the other reel. On reel M653-1408, Marshfield starts with two pages and is then interrupted by a different community and then repeats the two pages and then continues to the end of its census. ************************************************************************ Oceola: Enumerator's spelling is questionable, but I tried to transcribe as he had written. ************************************************************************ The Town of Ripon appears on two reels of microfilm. It starts inbetween the Towns of Alto and Ashford on M653-1407 and continues inbetween wards of the City of Ripon on M653-1408. ************************************************************************ Lamartine: Some pages are either repeated or out of order in the microfilm. ************************************************************************ Rosendale: From sheet 921 of microfilm reel M653-1408: State of Wisconsin County of Fond du Lac I, A.C.
