The passenger train which is due here at 2:40 P.M. and in charge of engineer D. B. Foster and conductor W. N. Roach, both of Fond Du Lac, was detained here on account of the snow plow which was to go ahead of the passenger and was under going repairs and on that account the passenger was delayed the extra time. The freight train was in charge of engineer Berrill and conductor Annis. The presence of mind exercised by engineer Foster undoubtedly saved a disastrous wreck. When he saw the train approaching he was well aware that they would be unable to stop in time, so he succeeded to release the brakes and get his engine in motion just when the freight train struck the passenger from the rear, burying itself in the vestibule. The cause of the accident is reported to be that the flag was not set out far enough to warn the freight crew that the passenger was still at the station. The passenger had a large number of people on board which were compelled to remain here until 9 o'clock that evening when a train was sent here from Fond Du Lac. Aid and supper was given to the injured by the M.E. Aid Society. Following are the seriously injured. Dr Chas Powers, Princeton, internally-Injured. Mrs John T Astolen,Redgranite, injured about the head. Mrs Clarence Whitney, Ripon, injured hip. F. Wagner, Wautoma, injured collar bone. A brakeman on the freight of Fond du Lac and an Italian, whos name we could not learn, but hails from Redgranite, were severely injured and were bedded on a cot and later moved to the hospital at Fond Du Lac. Dr Powers of this city is still confined to his bed. Following from here and vicinity had boarded the passenger to leave the city were: Cashier and Mrs H.J. Schmidt and Mrs Ludwig Dretske and Mr. Fordham. _ Additional Comments: Dr Chas Powers DDS was my great grandfather,no longer could practice dentistry after being injured in this wreck. He could no long stand for any long periods of time forcing him to give up his practice, loosing all he and my great grandma had.
